In a strategic move to streamline its operations and align with evolving market trends, Ubisoft has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated free-to-play spin-off game, The Division Heartland. The decision comes as part of the company’s efforts to refocus its resources on “bigger opportunities” and double down on its strengths in the open-world adventure and live service game segments.

The Division Heartland, originally announced in 2021, was set in a fractured America within the Division universe, offering a unique rural setting called Silver Creek in the American Midwest. Developed by Red Storm Entertainment, the game promised to introduce new playable characters and explore the secrets of the town left in ruins following the spread of the Dollar Flu virus. Players would have taken on the role of loyal Division agents, fighting alongside and against other trained operatives while attempting to restore hope to the survivors.

However, during Ubisoft’s Q4 and full-year earnings report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot revealed the company’s decision to halt development on The Division Heartland. “We are committed to continuing our turnaround in FY25 thanks to a very promising line-up that includes Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Rainbow Six Mobile, Star Wars Outlaws, The Division Resurgence, and XDefiant,” Guillemot stated, emphasizing the company’s strategic focus on leadership in the open-world adventure segment and expanding its Games as a Service (GaaS) experiences.

The cancellation of The Division Heartland aligns with Ubisoft’s “strategic pillars announced last year,” according to Guillemot. He further mentioned that the upcoming Ubisoft Forward event on June 10 will showcase the company’s dedication to “consistently creating and delivering high-quality, long-lasting experiences for players.”

While the news may disappoint fans of the Division franchise, Ubisoft’s decision reflects the company’s broader strategy to prioritize its resources on major open-world and live service titles. The cancellation of The Division Heartland follows a series of recent project terminations and layoffs at Ubisoft, as the publisher faces “major challenges” in an industry shifting towards “mega-brands and long-lasting titles.”

As Ubisoft navigates these challenges, the company remains committed to supporting the talented team members at Red Storm Entertainment, who will transition to new projects within the company, including the highly anticipated XDefiant and the Rainbow Six series.

With the cancellation of The Division Heartland, Ubisoft aims to streamline its operations and double down on its strengths, focusing on delivering high-quality, long-lasting experiences that cater to the evolving preferences of gamers and the industry’s shifting dynamics.
