Starfield’s Massive May Update Overhauls Maps, Adds Difficulty Options, and Expands Ship Customization

Bethesda delivers a substantial patch addressing community feedback and introducing new gameplay features.

Bethesda is delivering a substantial update for its epic space RPG Starfield this May, addressing several community concerns while introducing a wealth of new features and quality-of-life improvements. The highly anticipated patch promises to elevate the overall gaming experience, catering to a wide range of player preferences and playstyles.

One of the most significant changes coming with the May update is the complete overhaul of Starfield’s surface maps. Responding to widespread feedback, Bethesda has revamped the mapping system, replacing the original surface dots with clearer terrain markings and better visibility of points of interest. Additionally, vendors will now be marked on the maps, serving as handy fast-travel points for players exploring on foot.

Customization remains a core focus of the update, with the introduction of a suite of gameplay difficulty options. Players will now have the ability to fine-tune various aspects of the game, such as combat challenge, survival mechanics, inventory management, and resource scarcity. For those seeking an even greater test, a new “Extreme” difficulty level will be added, surpassing the current “Very Hard” setting and offering bonus experience rewards for those brave enough to take on the challenge.

Ship customization, a beloved feature in Starfield, is receiving a substantial expansion with the May update. Players will now be able to decorate the interiors of their spacecraft, akin to the existing outpost customization system. This will enable them to tailor the layout, add doorways, and even incorporate empty hab modules, truly making their ships a home away from home.

Quality-of-life improvements are also on the agenda, with the introduction of new options for dialogue camera perspectives and additional tabs in the Container and Barter menus for easier navigation. Furthermore, Xbox Series X players will gain greater control over graphics and performance, with the ability to prioritize visuals or frame rate, and even target specific frame rates between 30, 40, 60, or uncapped.

Starfield

The May update is already available for testing through Starfield’s Steam beta, ahead of its official release on May 15th. Bethesda has promised continued support for the game, with plans for land vehicle implementation, mod support, and the highly anticipated “Shattered Space” expansion later in the year.

As Starfield continues to evolve, this comprehensive update aims to address player concerns while introducing new layers of depth and customization, solidifying the game’s position as a true flagship of the space RPG genre. With Bethesda’s commitment to ongoing improvements, the universe of Starfield promises to become an even more immersive and rewarding experience for space explorers and RPG enthusiasts alike.
