“A Family Affair” Stars Reveal Film’s Original NSFW Title

Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman discuss how the provocative working title caught their attention

A Family Affair

In a recent interview, Hollywood stars Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes detail about their latest Netflix romantic comedy, “A Family Affair.” The film, which has been climbing the streaming charts, originally bore a much more provocative title that caught both actors’ attention and ultimately led to their involvement in the project.

“It was called ‘Motherf—–,'” Efron revealed to People magazine, with Kidman adding, “Beeped out. Somehow that didn’t make it onto the Netflix title.”

The eyebrow-raising working title served as an effective hook for both actors. Efron explained, “That made the script stay at the top of the pile. It’s like, what on Earth could this be about?” This initial intrigue, combined with the opportunity to work together again after their collaboration on “The Paperboy,” made the project an easy sell for both stars.

“A Family Affair” tells the story of a young woman (Joey King) who works as a personal assistant to a famous actor (Efron). The plot thickens when the actor begins a romantic relationship with his assistant’s mother (Kidman), exploring the dynamics of an age-gap romance from a fresh perspective.

Kidman praised the film for its positive approach to depicting a relationship between a younger man and an older woman, noting the scarcity of such narratives in cinema. “We’ve had it from way back with older men and younger women, that’s just always been the norm,” Kidman observed. “The problem is we’ve not had the equivalent from all different viewpoints, with women telling the stories.”

While the original title certainly grabbed attention, the decision to change it to “A Family Affair” aligns more closely with the film’s PG-13 rating and overall tone. The current title better reflects the movie’s lighthearted and family-friendly approach to its romantic storyline.

Despite the title change, the film has been making waves on Netflix, currently holding the top spot for streaming movies in the United States. Critics have given mixed reviews, but audiences seem to be embracing this star-studded romantic comedy.

As for the chemistry between the leads, Efron admitted to still being “enamored” with Kidman, a sentiment that dates back to their work on “The Paperboy.” This natural rapport between the actors appears to have translated well to their on-screen relationship in “A Family Affair.”

While some may wonder how the original, more provocative title might have impacted the film’s reception, both Efron and Kidman seem pleased with the final product. The movie’s success on Netflix suggests that even without its attention-grabbing working title, “A Family Affair” has found its audience.
