The highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 action thriller “Nobody” is officially moving forward, with Bob Odenkirk confirmed to reprise his role as Hutch Mansell. The follow-up to the surprise hit will see a change in the director’s chair, as Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto takes over from Ilya Naishuller, who helmed the original.

Nobody 2” is scheduled to begin production in August, with a targeted release date of August 15, 2025. The film will reunite much of the creative team behind the first installment, including writer Derek Kolstad, creator of the “John Wick” franchise. Kolstad will be joined in the writing room by Aaron Rabin, Umair Aleem, and Odenkirk himself, suggesting a collaborative approach to crafting the sequel’s story.

Tjahjanto, known for his work on intense action films like “The Night Comes for Us,” is expected to bring his dynamic visual style to the “Nobody” universe. His appointment hints at potentially more elaborate and visceral action sequences in the sequel.

While plot details remain under wraps, the first film’s ending provides intriguing possibilities for the follow-up. “Nobody” concluded with Hutch Mansell, a seemingly ordinary family man revealed to be a former government assassin, receiving a mysterious phone call months after his violent confrontation with the Russian mafia. This open-ended finale left viewers wondering about Hutch’s future and the identity of the caller.

One of the sequel’s most anticipated revelations may be the answer to the first film’s biggest mystery: who made the call that freed Hutch from police custody? The original movie hinted that this unknown figure might not be an ally, potentially setting up a new threat for the protagonist.

Connie Nielsen is set to return as Becca Mansell, Hutch’s wife, providing continuity to the family dynamic that grounded the first film. The production team includes Marc Provissiero of Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment, Braden Aftergood via Eighty Two Films, and David Leitch and Kelly McCormick through 87North.

The original “Nobody” was a commercial success, grossing $57 million worldwide despite its release during the pandemic. Critics praised Odenkirk’s performance, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it an “over-the-top vengeance narrative” while commending Odenkirk’s turn as the unassuming yet lethal Hutch Mansell.

As “Nobody 2” moves into production, fans of the original can look forward to more high-octane action, potential answers to lingering questions, and the return of Bob Odenkirk in a role that showcased his versatility as an actor. With a new director and an expanded writing team, the sequel promises to build upon the foundations laid by its predecessor while potentially taking the franchise in exciting new directions.
