Smallville Revisited: The Real Reasons Behind Jensen Ackles and Kristin Kreuk’s Exits

The series' showrunner and star actresses shed new light on the shocking departures of Jason Teague and Lana Lang

For over a decade, the Superman origin series Smallville enthralled viewers with its grounded, character-driven take on Clark Kent’s journey to becoming the Man of Steel. However, two of the show’s most pivotal characters – Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles) and Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) – made surprising early exits that left many fans wondering what happened behind the scenes.

Now, insights from Smallville’s own creative team are finally revealing the full story. In a recent interview on the TalkVille rewatch podcast, showrunner Alfred Gough disclosed that Ackles’ departure as the villainous Jason Teague after just one season was primarily motivated by the actor’s opportunity to lead Supernatural.

“We had a one-season arc for his character,” Gough explained. “If it was going great, we’d talk about keeping him longer. But then of course, he got Supernatural – the rest is history.”

Ackles was just coming off his memorable turn as Jason, Lana’s possessive boyfriend who collected Kryptonian artifacts to become a powerful threat to Clark. According to Gough, there were tentative plans to potentially expand Jason into a bigger antagonist across multiple seasons before Supernatural came calling.

“There were several episodes [of Smallville] he couldn’t be in because he was shooting [Supernatural],” Gough noted. This scheduling conflict, coupled with the fact that Jason had decisively severed ties with Clark and his allies by season 4’s end, led to the character’s fiery death in a meteor shower.

While Jason’s abrupt departure after just one season was predetermined, Lana Lang’s own exit played out very differently. Portrayer Kristin Kreuk remained a series regular and core cast member until the season 7 finale, when Lana left town so Clark could fully embrace his destiny.

However, at a Superman Celebration panel, Kreuk revealed she actively turned down an offer to return for the show’s final season 8 run.

“I just wanted her to be off in imaginary land,” Kreuk said of why she declined to bring Lana back. “I wanted her to keep living the life that she had gone off to live, and I didn’t want to bring her back into the world.”

The actress admitted she had grown weary of Lana’s story continually revolving around her romantic entanglements with Clark and Lex. “I like that she got to have her independence and got to find the path forward for herself that was tied to what she believed in,” Kreuk explained.

She also pushed back on the perception that Lois Lane “replaced” Lana as Clark’s love interest, arguing, “I really struggle with the idea that one woman replaces another woman, and I struggle with the idea that these womens’ lives don’t continue on.”

While neither character made it to the Smallville finale, both Ackles and Kreuk have kept busy in the years since. Ackles has drawn raves for roles like Supernatural’s Dean Winchester and Soldier Boy on The Boys, while regularly campaigning for a chance to play Batman. Kreuk meanwhile remains open to a potential Smallville revival or reunion project.
