‘Walker’ Finale Introduces Mystery Neighbor, Teases Unfinished Cult Storyline

Showrunners reveal plans for James Van Der Beek's character in the series' canceled fifth season

The CW’s “Walker” has concluded its four-season run with a series finale that tied up many loose ends while also introducing an intriguing new character, played by former WB star James Van Der Beek. The finale, titled “See You Sometime,” aired on June 26, 2024, leaving fans with a mix of closure and curiosity about what might have been.

The episode focused on the Walker family rebuilding after the closure of the Jackal case. Cordell Walker, portrayed by Jared Padalecki, celebrated his son Augie’s high school graduation and made plans for a summer away with his girlfriend Geri and his children. However, the true cliffhanger came in the final moments when a mysterious new neighbor, played by Van Der Beek, was introduced.

In an unexpected twist, Van Der Beek’s character was shown leaving a basket of soap on the Walkers’ porch with a neighborly note. This seemingly innocuous gesture was imbued with an ominous undertone, leaving viewers to speculate about the character’s true intentions.

In interviews following the finale, Padalecki and showrunner Anna Fricke revealed that Van Der Beek’s character was intended to be a major part of the planned fifth season. Fricke disclosed that he was meant to be a “quirky bad, but amusing” cult leader, bringing a new dynamic to the show.

“The season was not written, but needless to say, that [James Van Der Beek] cliffhanger was going to pay off as an enormous part, probably the main driving force, of Season 5,” Padalecki explained. He added that Cordell might have taken a backseat with his Ranger duties, possibly being “purposefully naïve” to the goings-on next door.

Fricke, who started her career on “Dawson’s Creek” where Van Der Beek rose to fame, shared that bringing him onto “Walker” had been a long-time goal. “Ever since James Van Der Beek moved to Austin, we’ve been like, ‘How do we get him into the show?'” she said.

The cancellation of “Walker” after four seasons, announced by Padalecki in May, means that this intriguing storyline will remain unexplored on screen. However, the revelations about the planned direction for Season 5 offer fans a glimpse of what might have been.

Despite the unresolved cliffhanger, the finale did provide closure on several fronts. Cassie secured the Texas Ranger Lieutenant position, while Cordell decided to take a leave of absence, setting up the summer away with his family.

As “Walker” concludes its run, it leaves behind a legacy of family drama and Texas Ranger action, with fans left to imagine the potential adventures – and dangers – that might have awaited the Walkers had the series continued.
