Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman Reunite in Netflix’s ‘A Family Affair

Twelve years after 'The Paperboy,' the duo's chemistry sizzles in a film that almost had a very different title

A Family Affair

More than a decade after their first on-screen pairing, Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron have rekindled their cinematic chemistry in Netflix’s latest romantic comedy, “A Family Affair.” The film marks a significant reunion for the duo, who last shared the screen in Lee Daniels’ 2012 crime drama “The Paperboy.”

In “A Family Affair,” Efron portrays Chris Cole, a self-absorbed Hollywood star who becomes romantically involved with Brooke Harwood (Kidman), the widowed mother of his personal assistant, Zara Ford (Joey King). The unconventional premise promises a blend of romance, humor, and potential awkwardness, as the characters navigate their complex relationships.

Reflecting on their collaboration, both actors expressed a deep mutual respect and comfort level. “I’m still so enamored with Nicole,” Efron admitted to People magazine. “There’s a part of me that pinches myself when I realize who I’m working with.” Kidman reciprocated the sentiment, highlighting the advantage of their pre-existing rapport: “It’s really helpful when you’re doing this sort of work together that you’ve already got a history together, because it’s easy.”

The pair’s comfort with each other was evident from the first day of rehearsals, according to director Richard LaGravenese. He noted how their genuine friendship and previous working relationship translated effortlessly into their on-screen dynamic.

Interestingly, “A Family Affair” initially bore a more provocative title. Efron revealed that the script was originally called “Motherf***er,” a title that, while not Netflix-friendly, certainly caught the actors’ attention. “It’s like, what on Earth could this be about?” Efron joked, explaining how the audacious title kept the script “at the top of the pile.”

The journey from “The Paperboy” to “A Family Affair” showcases the evolution of Kidman and Efron’s professional relationship. In their first collaboration, which earned Kidman a Golden Globe nomination, Efron admits to being “very nervous” due to his younger age and Kidman’s star power. Now, he says, “We both feel safe, and we take care of each other.”

Kidman praised Efron’s approach to their new project, noting his willingness to dive in and have fun. “He came in and makes the film because he was like, ‘I’m here to have fun, to play, and to very much be a part of this and be there for you,’ for both Joey and I,” she explained.

As “A Family Affair” streams on Netflix, audiences have the opportunity to witness the enduring on-screen magic between Kidman and Efron. Their reunion in this romantic comedy not only showcases their individual talents but also demonstrates how their professional relationship has matured and deepened over time, promising viewers a charming and chemistry-filled viewing experience.
