Helldivers 2 Community Chooses Humanity Over Loot, Inspires Charity Donation

Arrowhead Game Studios donates to Save the Children after players prioritize rescuing virtual children over securing in-game rewards.

In a heartwarming display of moral conscience, the Helldivers 2 community collectively chose to rescue virtual children over securing valuable in-game loot, prompting the game’s developer, Arrowhead Game Studios, to make a real-world donation to Save the Children.

The latest “Major Order” in Helldivers 2 presented players with a difficult choice: respond to a distress call to save survivors trapped at “Super Citizen Anne’s Hospital for Very Sick Children” or secure an explosives repository held by the Automatons on the planet Marfark. The latter option would have rewarded players with a new powerful Stratagem, the MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines.

Despite the temptation of acquiring a potent new in-game weapon, the Helldivers 2 community rallied together to prioritize the rescue mission, knowingly forgoing the opportunity to obtain the mines. Their decision to save the virtual children, though set in a fictional world, resonated with deeper humanitarian values.

Arrowhead Game Studios, touched by the community’s compassionate choice, responded in kind by making a charitable donation of $4,311 to Save the Children, a renowned organization dedicated to improving the lives of children worldwide. The donation amount corresponded to the number of children saved during the in-game operation, adding a poignant connection between the virtual and real worlds.

“Since the Helldivers 2 community chose to save the children, [Arrowhead Game Studios] does the same,” said Johan Pilestedt, CCO and Helldivers 2 creative director. “We have made a donation to, well, Save the Children. Great job Divers!”

In a heartfelt twist, players received a follow-up message from the rescued in-game children, expressing their gratitude: “Dear Helldivers: Thank you so much for saving us. They told us you made a lot of sacrifices (mines/lives) to help us. We’ll always be grateful. Now, we can grow up to become Helldivers too.”

While the developer playfully challenged players to secure the mines on a future mission, recognizing the improbability of success, the core message resonated loud and clear: the Helldivers 2 community’s compassionate choice transcended the virtual realm, inspiring real-world positive change.

This heartwarming tale reminds us that even within the confines of a video game, the power of collective humanity can shine through, prompting acts of kindness that ripple far beyond the digital realm.
