Nintendo Teases New Mario & Luigi RPG, Developer Remains a Mystery

Nintendo confirms involvement of original series developers in upcoming Switch title, but keeps studio identity secret until release

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Nintendo has set the gaming world abuzz with the announcement of a new entry in the beloved Mario & Luigi RPG series, titled “Mario & Luigi: Brothership.” The reveal, which came during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, has left fans eager for more details, particularly regarding the game’s development team.

With the series’ original developer, AlphaDream, no longer in operation, speculation has been rife about who might be taking the reins for this highly anticipated Switch title. When pressed for details, Nintendo has remained characteristically tight-lipped, with a company representative telling Game File’s Stephen Totilo that fans will have to wait until the game’s release to see the credits for full information on the development team.

However, the representative did offer a tantalizing tidbit, revealing that “some of the original developers who worked on the franchise are involved” in the project. This news has sparked hope among fans that the new game will maintain the charm and quality of its predecessors.

Industry observers have noted that several key figures from AlphaDream have remained in Nintendo’s orbit since the studio’s closure. These include Hiroyuki Kubota, AlphaDream’s former development manager who now works at Monolith Soft, and Yoshihiko Maekawa, a director and producer on previous Mario & Luigi titles who recently supervised the Switch version of Super Mario RPG.

Meanwhile, rumors have begun circulating about potential developers for the project. One theory gaining traction comes from AlphaDream fan Lizardy, who suggested on social media that ILCA, the studio behind Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes and One Piece Odyssey, might be developing Brothership. Lizardy has promised to provide evidence for this claim in an upcoming video, though it remains unconfirmed at this time.

Nintendo’s secrecy around development teams has become increasingly common, though not always successful. In a recent incident, official documentation appeared to reveal that Polish company Forever Entertainment is involved in developing Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for Switch, despite Nintendo’s attempts to keep this information under wraps.

As for Mario & Luigi: Brothership, fans will have to exercise patience. The game is slated for release later this year, promising to continue the series’ trademark blend of humor, exploration, and RPG mechanics. Whether it will live up to the high standards set by AlphaDream remains to be seen, but the involvement of original team members offers a glimmer of hope for long-time fans of the franchise.

For now, Nintendo enthusiasts are left to speculate and eagerly await more information about this exciting new chapter in the Mario & Luigi saga.
