A unique new survival game is brewing in the form of Stormforge from developer Roboto Games. Blending open-world crafting and base building with RPG mechanics and inspiration from fantasy worlds like The Stormlight Archive, Stormforge aims to carve out its own distinct identity.
Set in the procedurally generated realm of Sorana, players must acquire resources, craft gear, and construct shelters while contending with a perpetual threat – devastating magical storms that ravage the landscape. These arcane maelstroms serve as both a hazard to overcome and a source of precious materials, creating tense risk/reward gameplay loops.
“In Stormforge, the storms are a constant threat, but they are also one of the ways in which you obtain certain resources,” explained the developers. “What this creates are risk versus reward situations, something that [we] intend to be something special about [the] game.”
Beyond the core survival gameplay, Stormforge incorporates RPG mechanics that allow players to craft unique weapons and gear while utilizing special abilities and skills. An evocative art style inspired by Moebius and Miyazaki brings the fantasy world to life with a distinct graphic novel aesthetic.
The open-ended nature extends to the gameplay experience as well. Players can brave the ever-changing environment solo or team up in online co-op parties of up to eight adventurers. Mod support with integrated creation tools is also planned to encourage community creativity.
Stormforge has already garnered interest following reveals at recent gaming showcases like IGN Live and PC Gaming Show. Roboto Games is now opening playtesting sign-ups on the official website ahead of an expected Steam Early Access launch in 2025.
By fusing survival mechanics, RPG depth, an imaginative world, and moddable sandbox potential, Stormforge looks to offer a refreshing new take on the crafting/survival genre when it ultimately releases next year. Fans of games like Valheim that enjoy a strong theme and flexible gameplay may want to keep an eye on this stormy horizon.
