James Gunn is bringing his unique vision to DC comics in a big way. His first new project is an animated series called “Creature Commandos” that’s coming to HBO Max this December. This show will kick off Gunn’s plans to reinvent the DC Universe.
At Comic-Con last month, Gunn surprised fans with the first trailer for “Creature Commandos.” It gives us a sneak peek at the strange world of the story. Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller, who is putting together a team of super-powered criminals for black ops missions. Kinda sounds like Suicide Squad, but with a new crew of characters.
Even though it’s a cartoon, Gunn says “Creature Commandos” isn’t for little kids. He wants it to have an edgier, more mature feel. This will reportedly set the tone for the other DC projects coming in the next few years, like the new Superman movie planned for 2025.
The voice cast looks awesome too. Frank Grillo leads as Rick Flag Sr. with Sean Gunn, James’ brother, playing two roles. David Harbour, from Stranger Things, also stars. The rest of the team includes famous actors like Alan Tudyk and Anya Chalotra. Coolest of all, Gunn said these same actors may play the characters on the big screen someday too.
Details on the actual plot are still secret. But it seems Amanda Waller will form a new group called “Taskforce M” using super-powered Belle Reve inmates for dangerous missions. They’ll take on jobs that would be too rough for regular soldiers. So it should provide lots of action and suspense.
As the starting point for Gunn’s DC Universe, “Creature Commandos” has a big job shaping what fans can expect. Unlike Marvel movies, it doesn’t seem Gunn will closely link every new project. We’ll have to wait until December to find out how his unique take on DC turns out. Until then, keep an eye on Gunn online – he’s sure to share more clues about what’s to come!
