Elliot Page Navigates Family Reunion in Poignant Drama “Close to You”

Actor co-writes and stars in intimate portrayal of a trans man's journey back home

Close To You (2023)

Elliot Page is making a big comeback on the big screen later this year. He’s starring in a new movie called “Close to You” where he plays a character named Sam. Sam is a guy who moved away from his hometown four years ago and is now returning to visit his dad for his birthday.

The movie looks like it will explore some important topics. It seems to be about how relationships with family can be complicated, especially when someone goes through big changes in their life. Sam left as a girl but is now living as a man. The trailer shows him dealing with awkward moments like seeing old photos and remeeting people from his past.

One scene really stood out to me. Sam is talking to a relative and says “I’m just a person, just talk to me.” That line sums up how the film is about seeking understanding from others, even when they may see you differently now.

Elliot, who uses he/him pronouns, actually helped write the script for this movie. So it should feel really real, coming from his own experiences. Dominic Savage, the director, is known for digging deep into human emotions. And the acting looks top-notch from Elliot and the whole cast.

Another storyline involves Sam reconnecting with his old friend Katherine, played by Hillary Baack. It looks like their relationship may be rekindling, which should add another layer to Sam’s journey of self-discovery back home.

This movie premiered at some big film festivals last year and the reviews so far have been great. Critics have praised Elliot’s powerful performance. As his first major role since publicly coming out, “Close to You” seems poised to deliver an impactful story about identity and the courage it takes to live as your authentic self. I can’t wait to see it when it’s released this August.
