Tom Holkenborg Reflects on Working with George Miller and Zack Snyder

Acclaimed composer discusses his work on 'Furiosa', 'Rebel Moon', and teases 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3'

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Junkie XL has become one of the movie business’s most in-demand musical talents. In a recent chat, the composer opened up about scoring blockbusters like Furiosa and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Holkenborg got his start assisting Hans Zimmer on films like Man of Steel. This led to a fruitful partnership with Zack Snyder on movies like the Snyder Cut and Rebel Moon.

He divulged details about returning to the Mad Max world for the Furiosa prequel. Director George Miller told him to disregard the franchise’s past scores – “That was then. I want something new.” Junkie respected Miller’s unique, detail-oriented directing style, saying his sense of minutiae is “mind-boggling.”

In Furiosa, Junkie took on an expanded role by helping with the final sound mix. This gave him control over marrying his music into the film’s overall soundscape. He called it “liberating” and a career highlight.

The composer also shared his excitement for Sonic 3, having seen it recently. As a dad, he feels invested in the blue hedgehog’s journey thanks to his sons loving the earlier films.

Junkie spoke of the importance of collaboration, like with mentor Hans Zimmer. Their supportive friendship helps navigate Hollywood.

As he continues shaping franchises from Mad Max to Sonic, Junkie’s insights offer a window into a composer’s evolving role. With such a wide range of projects, he remains one of film music’s most versatile talents.
