Electronic Arts (EA) has announced a groundbreaking update for The Sims 4, introducing polyamory features in a free update alongside the upcoming Lovestruck expansion pack. This move marks a significant milestone in the game’s ongoing efforts to represent diverse relationships and lifestyles.

The free update, scheduled for release around July 25, 2024, will introduce the new Romantic Boundaries system. This feature allows players to customize their Sims’ approach to romantic relationships, separating physical and emotional exclusivity. As described in the official Sims blog, “This allows for Sims to date multiple Sims without impact to other relationships.” The introduction of polyamory options addresses a long-standing request from the Sims community, who have been asking for such features for decades.

Alongside this free update, EA is launching The Sims 4: Lovestruck expansion pack. Set in the romantic world of Ciudad Enamorada, the expansion introduces three new neighborhoods: Vista Hermosa, Plaza Mariposa, and Nuevo Corazón. The pack focuses heavily on romance, featuring a dating app called Cupid Corner, turn-ons and turn-offs mechanics, and the ability for Sims to become Romance Consultants.

The introduction of polyamory features is particularly noteworthy given the game’s history. Since the original Sims game, characters have been notoriously jealous in romantic relationships. In The Sims 2, for instance, even a crush could trigger jealousy if the object of affection engaged in romantic activities with others. While subsequent games toned down this aspect, creating polyamorous relationships remained challenging without the use of mods.

This update is part of The Sims 4’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity. In recent years, the game has introduced features allowing players to define their Sims’ sexual orientation, choose custom pronouns, and access trans-inclusive options such as top surgery scars and chest binders. As SimGuruJessica stated, “As a team, we hold creativity, discovery, inclusivity and play as core values and strive every day to celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion for our people and community.”

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from the Sims community. Fans have taken to social media to express their excitement, with one user humorously commenting, “Big news for me, who always played sims with the intention of being the biggest ho in town.” Another fan noted the update’s potential for recreating complex relationship dynamics from popular media.

As The Sims 4 continues to evolve, these new features represent a significant step towards more realistic and diverse relationship representations in video games. The Lovestruck expansion pack and the free polyamory update are set to launch on July 25, 2024, promising to add new dimensions to the virtual lives of Sims players worldwide.
