More than a decade after its finale, the beloved medical sitcom Scrubs could be returning to television screens. Bill Lawrence, the creator and showrunner of Scrubs, recently revealed that he is open to developing a revival of the popular series that aired from 2001 to 2010. Lawrence hopes to address issues some fans had with the ninth and final season while also honoring the characters that made the show a hit.

Scrubs followed doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital over nine seasons. The series was praised for its blend of humor and emotion. It also featured fantasy sequences that provided insight into the mind of main character JD, played by Zach Braff. However, the ninth season focused on a new group of medical interns and felt disconnected from earlier seasons to some viewers.

Lawrence wants to avoid the weaknesses of that final season. He told an interviewer “I don’t want to do it as a movie, but I’m definitely open to doing a couple more years of that show.” He aims to introduce new doctors and storylines while still featuring beloved characters. Zach Braff, who played JD, believes his character would now mentor others as Dr. Cox once mentored him. Braff sees potential to showcase how JD has matured while still valuing the joy of his beginnings.

Interest in a revival has grown due to the Scrubs rewatch podcast hosted by Braff and co-star Donald Faison. Their podcast shares behind-the-scenes details and has Lawrence as a frequent guest. He regularly discusses the possibility of reviving Scrubs there. While not all original cast could return, Lawrence seems focused on recapturing what made earlier Scrubs seasons so successful and beloved. A balanced approach to old and new could both please longtime fans and introduce Scrubs to new viewers.
