Sigourney Weaver Joins ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu,’ Marking Star Wars Debut

Veteran actress set to appear in first theatrical Star Wars release since 2019, directed by Jon Favreau

The Mandalorian & Grogu

Lucasfilm has added acclaimed actress Sigourney Weaver to the cast of its next big-screen Star Wars adventure. Weaver will appear in the film “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” set to continue the story of famed bounty hunter Din Djarin, also known as the Mandalorian, and his adopted son Grogu. Directed by Jon Favreau, creator of the hit Disney+ series, the movie is slated for a May 2026 theatrical release.

In a recent interview with entertainment website Deadline, Weaver revealed she is excited about her new role in the Star Wars universe. She also expressed joy at meeting Grogu for the first time during pre-production. While details of her character are still under wraps, Weaver’s casting adds significant star power as the film moves closer to production.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” will pick up where the television series left off, further exploring the bond between the armored bounty hunter and his small green companion known to fans as “Baby Yoda.” At a presentation earlier this year, Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni debuted early footage to enthusiastic viewers. Scenes shown included Grogu in his hovering pod and the Mandalorian in full armor on a snowy planet with his ship, the Razor Crest, in the background.

While many familiar characters and places are expected to return, actor Temuera Morrison indicated his character Boba Fett from “The Book of Boba Fett” will not appear. Low reception for that series may have influenced this design choice. Looking ahead, Lucasfilm has several other Star Wars titles in development, including new seasons of “Andor” and projects from top directors.

As the May 2026 release date approaches, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is generating excitement among fans eager to see the beloved duo’s further adventures alongside science fiction legend Sigourney Weaver.
