Indian folklore horror sees unexpected resurgence six years after initial release

The 2018 Indian horror film “Tumbbad” has found new life after being re-released in theaters across India. The cult classic, which tells the story of a village boy seeking a cursed treasure guarded by a demon, originally earned $2 million globally after debuting at film festivals in 2018. Its recent rerelease took in $1.5 million in India alone, coming close to matching its initial worldwide total.

This unexpected box office success has breathed new energy into developing a sequel. Actor and producer Sohum Shah confirmed plans are underway to start filming “Tumbbad 2” in 2025. “We spent six years working to perfect the script and make sure the story does the original film justice,” Shah told Variety magazine. Developing a worthy sequel presented major challenges, as Shah wanted to honor the unique world and themes of the first film.

While Shah will produce the sequel, Rahi Anil Barve – who co-directed “Tumbbad” – will not return due to other commitments. Adesh Prasad will direct the new installment alone. Barve is currently involved in an action-fantasy series for Netflix India called “Rakt Bramhand – The Bloody Kingdom.”

The enduring popularity of “Tumbbad” highlights a growing trend in India of past films finding renewed success. Both Shah and Barve attribute this to the first-class production values that made the horror story truly immersive. Its breathtaking visuals and cinematography were designed for optimal viewing on the big screen. Many fans who originally streamed it are now flocking to theaters seeking that enhanced experience.

Looking ahead, Shah envisions expanding the “Tumbbad” franchise into prequels, spin-offs and reboots to further explore its complex universe. However, both filmmakers remain focused on conveying the meaningful themes at the story’s core. As Barve reflected, “Greed will destroy everything valuable, so we must reflect on our own desires.” As “Tumbbad” attracts both old and new fans, its resurgence shows innovative storytelling continues enhancing Indian cinema.
