‘Gladiator II’ Stirs Oscar Buzz After First Screening

Ridley Scott's long-awaited sequel garners rave reviews, setting stage for potential awards season triumph

Gladiator II

Early reviews for Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated “Gladiator II” were overwhelmingly positive following the film’s first screening for media and critics. Set for theatrical release on November 22, 2024, the sequel has generated a buzz of enthusiastic reaction on social media.

The film stars Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus II, the nephew of emperor Commodus from the original Oscar-winning “Gladiator.” The story follows Lucius as he works as a gladiator in Rome seeking revenge, after being forced into slavery. Critics praised Mescal’s performance, along with the star-studded supporting cast which includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Joseph Quinn.

Washington’s role has particularly stood out, described by Variety critic Clayton Davis as “one of his most impressive.” Davis went so far as to suggest that “a third Oscar for Denzel Washington wouldn’t be surprising.” The epic scale of the production also drew praise, with multiple viewers calling it a “total spectacle.” Davis hailed director Ridley Scott’s work as his “best since Black Hawk Down,” specifically noting the gripping action sequences and fast-paced storyline.

While full reviews are still under embargo, early reactions suggest the film not only meets but may even surpass its acclaimed predecessor in scale and ambition. Technical aspects like visual effects and production quality drew raves. Despite positive word-of-mouth from critics, box office projections remain at $53-75 million for the opening weekend. However, enthusiastic fan response on social media could boost those numbers as more people learn about the film.

Some concerns were raised after the trailer release regarding musical choices. But based on the screening, it appears those fears have been assuaged. With its sweeping story, talented actors and Ridley Scott’s proven direction, “Gladiator II” is poised to be a worthy successor to the original when it releases this November.
