A new Netflix movie is set to bring awareness to the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The as-yet-untitled film is based on the real-life rescue efforts of a group of young activists. These individuals worked to save thousands of refugees attempting the dangerous sea crossing to Europe.

The film started production in both Berlin and Malta in recent weeks. It features a talented cast including Louis Hofmann and Mala Emde. Hofmann stars as one of the activists who launched a crowdfunding campaign. Their goal was to purchase a ship that could carry out rescue operations. With funds raised, the group obtained an older vessel. They then embarked on a mission that ultimately saved thousands of lives at risk crossing the Mediterranean.

The movie traces this story. It follows the Berlin-based group associated with the NGO Jugend Rettet. Moved by the plight of migrants risking their lives, these passionate but inexperienced individuals took action. Netflix hints that their rescue work put their sense of law and justice to the test. This suggests the film will explore ethical challenges around migrant sea rescues.

The production boasts an experienced crew. Those involved include Oscar-winning designers Christian Goldbeck and Volker Bertelmann. Goldbeck handles production design while Bertelmann creates the music score. Cinematography is led by Frankie DeMarco. Meanwhile, the screenplay comes from a collaboration between Oliver Ziegenbalg and Michele Cinque. Christopher Zwickler of Flute Film is producing with directors Markus Goller and Ziegenbalg.

Netflix has had success previously with German-language content. Examples include the Oscar-winning film “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Emmy-winning series “The Empress.” This latest production continues Netflix’s commitment to socially aware international stories. While inspired by real events, details suggest the film may address tensions between rescue efforts and policies restricting migration.

As filming in Malta continues, Netflix has not announced a release date. However, with its timely and important subject matter, along with talented participants, expectations are high for this addition to Netflix’s collection of thoughtful global productions.
