Sam Raimi-produced survival thriller tests limits of immobilized protagonist

Netflix’s latest thriller film “Don’t Move” tells the story of a woman struggling to escape a paralyzing killer. In the 85-minute movie released this week, Kelsey Asbille portrays Iris, a woman who loses control of her body after encountering the film’s antagonist Richard played by Finn Wittrock. With help from only her eyes, Iris must find a way to survive as Richard hunts her through a forest.

While visiting the woods to mourn her dead son, Iris meets Richard who later drugs her with a substance that slowly immobilizes her body. Viewers then watch as Richard stalks Iris who can no longer move. Critics have praised Wittrock’s unsettling performance as the film’s villain, with one reviewer noting Richard’s ability to transition from friendly to threatening.

Asbille’s role required her to lay still for much of the film. Some critics felt Iris’ backstory and motivation were not fully explained. There is praise for intense sequences like one near a river that increases tension without graphic violence. However, others point out inconsistencies in how much Iris is shown to be able to move at different points.

Reviews comment on the film’s runtime of around 85 minutes, with opinions divided on whether condensing the plot may have improved its pacing. Despite criticisms, “Don’t Move” seems to resonate with Netflix audiences seeking seasonal chills without graphic horror. As part of a string of recent thriller additions, its quick pace and unique premise provide accessibility especially for those who enjoy tension without traditional frightening elements.
