Gary Oldman, an Oscar-winning British actor, will perform in a production of Samuel Beckett’s play “Krapp’s Last Tape” at York Theatre Royal in Yorkshire, England, from April to May 2025. This marks Oldman’s return to the stage for the first time in almost 40 years. His last stage appearance was in 1987.
The production will take place at York Theatre Royal, where Oldman began his career after graduating college in 1979. For several years, he acted in various roles at the small theater. Oldman visited York Theatre Royal earlier this year, sparking discussions about performing there again.
Now 66 years old, Oldman is best known for roles in films like “Darkest Hour,” for which he won an Academy Award. However, he started as a theater actor, a career path his longtime manager Douglas Urbanski says they have frequently discussed bringing Oldman back to.
York Theatre Royal’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Crewe said the intimate one-man show “Krapp’s Last Tape” was the perfect vehicle for Oldman’s return. The story of an aging man listening to recordings of his younger self seems poignant given Oldman’s career.
Currently, Oldman is filming Season 6 of the TV drama “Slow Horses” in London. But he will take a break next spring to headline the new production of “Krapp’s Last Tape” exclusively at York Theatre Royal from April to May 2025. No other locations are planned.
Fans and the theater community eagerly await seeing Oldman revisit his theatrical roots in the role. His performance will offer a unique opportunity to witness his talent in the intimate setting where he began his career over 40 years ago.
