The director of the popular “Smile” horror movie franchise, Parker Finn, recently discussed the future of the series in interviews promoting the sequel film “Smile 2.” Finn emphasized maintaining mystery around the films’ central entity known as the Smiler. He said revealing too many details about the Smiler’s origins could diminish its frightening effect on audiences.

Finn also explained how the Smiler adapts uniquely to each person it torments. This allows the films to explore different psychological aspects of their main characters’ trauma. In “Smile 2,” the Smiler preys upon pop star Skye Riley’s insecurities and mental state. Naomi Scott’s performance as Riley showed her capability to portray both a famous celebrity and a person spiraling into darkness, according to Finn.

“Smile 2” has exceeded the commercial and critical success of the first film from 2022. It remains on track to beat the original’s $22.6 million opening weekend total. This solidifies the franchise as a notable part of today’s horror genre. Looking ahead, Finn said larger-scale future installments are possible while still focusing on character-driven stories. He wants audiences to feel emotionally connected to the characters even if the Smiler’s scope continues expanding.

When asked about similarities to M. Night Shyamalan’s new film “Trap,” which also centers around a musician, Finn acknowledged the surface-level resemblance but emphasized each project’s uniqueness. As for a potential “Smile 3,” Finn seemed optimistic without providing specifics. The ending of “Smile 2” leaves room for continuation. By blending psychological terror and supernatural elements, the “Smile” films have carved a specialty within the horror genre that fans eagerly await learning more about.
