Paramount+ has set an end date for its flagship space adventure: “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will conclude with a six-episode fifth season, the streamer confirmed on Thursday, 12 June. The renewal-cum-cancellation lands more than a month before the season-three premiere, underlining Paramount’s confidence in the series even as it formalises its final frontier.
In a joint statement, executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman said the show set out “to honor what Star Trek has always stood for—boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,” adding they were “grateful to complete our five-season mission.”
Viewers still have plenty of voyages ahead. Season 3 launches on 17 July with a two-episode premiere and runs weekly through 11 September; season 4, already filming in Mississauga since 3 March, is expected to deliver ten episodes next year, after which production will roll straight into the abbreviated final season later in 2025.
“Strange New Worlds” debuted in May 2022 and quickly earned critical accolades for its episodic storytelling and optimistic tone, notching Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes and a Saturn Award for Best Science-Fiction Television Series. Seasons 1–4 each contain ten instalments, so the 46-episode run will close well shy of “Star Trek: Discovery’s” 65-episode total.
The decision continues a pattern: both “Discovery” and the animated “Lower Decks” wrapped after five seasons, reflecting Paramount’s strategy of limiting expensive genre shows to a finite arc. Industry analysts note that new streaming chief Cindy Holland has capped drama budgets near US$9 million per episode as the company seeks profitability following last year’s $1.6 billion writedown.
While some fans lament another early goodbye, online forums have largely welcomed the advance notice, arguing it gives writers time to land the Enterprise “exactly where Kirk takes the chair.” Others fear the broader contraction of Trek programming, with only the in-production “Starfleet Academy” series guaranteed beyond 2027.
For now, cast and crew emphasise that three fresh seasons lie ahead. “This adventure is far from over,” Goldsman promised—though viewers now know precisely where it ends.
