Writers’ Strike Halts Blade Production and Other Marvel Projects

As the writers' strike takes its toll on Hollywood, Marvel pauses Blade and several other projects currently in production.

Although they may not be the most visible contributors to a production, scriptwriters play a crucial role in shaping film and television projects.

This fact is evident as the Hollywood writers’ strike has already impacted several shows, including Saturday Night Live, and disrupted the filming of Blade and other Marvel productions.

Blade Production Paused

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel initially planned to commence filming for Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, in June.

The studio enlisted True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto to polish the script, but according to production sources, time has proven insufficient. Consequently, Marvel has decided to halt the production of Blade and other ongoing projects.

Currently, Marvel is in the midst of filming Captain America: New World Order in Atlanta, with Anthony Mackie taking on the lead role. Additionally, the Agatha: Coven of Chaos series is in production.

The Wonder Man series is being filmed in Los Angeles, while Deadpool 3 is set to begin shooting in London at the end of the month, and The Thunderbolts is slated to start filming in Atlanta in early June. For now, these productions appear to be proceeding as planned.

The Financial Impact of the Strike

An insider close to Marvel revealed that the writers’ strike has put over a billion dollars in studio investments at risk as various productions face delays. However, another source suggests that Marvel is unlikely to halt production completely.

Instead, the studio may opt to film as much content as possible and schedule reshoots for a later date—a common practice within Marvel that is typically accounted for in production timelines.
