Persona and Yakuza Set Sights on the Silver Screen

Expanding the Horizons of Sega's Beloved IPs.

Like A Dragon

Sega, known for its iconic gaming franchises, is considering expanding its creative horizons by adapting the “Persona” and “Yakuza/Like a Dragon” series into movies.

This move comes in the wake of the company’s successful ventures with the “Sonic the Hedgehog” film adaptations, which have set a precedent for bringing video game IPs to new mediums.

In an interview with CNBC, Sega’s Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi expressed the company’s intent to grow its other franchises’ reach by exploring various business opportunities, including potential film adaptations.

Sega’s strategy involves leveraging the broad appeal of its major IPs, as seen with Sonic’s expansion into movies, TV shows, Roblox, and collaborations with Lego.

Utsumi highlighted “Persona” and “Yakuza” as key IPs for Sega’s expansion plans. These franchises, well-regarded in the gaming community, offer unique narratives and rich worlds that could translate effectively into film. The move to adapt these games into movies signifies Sega’s commitment to diversifying its presence in the entertainment industry.

Both “Persona” and “Yakuza” continue to thrive in the gaming space, with recent and upcoming releases keeping fans engaged. “Persona 5 Tactica” is set to launch on November 17, while “Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name” was released on November 9. Additionally, 2024 promises major releases for both series, including “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth” and a remake of “Persona 3” titled “Persona 3: Reload.”
