A Hollywood Twist to Tekken 8’s Saga with Brian Cox

Blending Cinematic Talent with Gaming Storytelling.

Bandai Namco, in a surprising move, has enlisted Brian Cox, the acclaimed HBO star known for his role in “Succession,” to narrate the story recap for their upcoming release, “Tekken 8.” This unexpected choice adds a unique flavor to the game’s presentation, intriguing both gamers and fans of the actor alike.

“Tekken 8,” though the 11th installment in the long-standing Tekken series, brings a fresh perspective to its storytelling by involving Brian Cox, an actor not traditionally associated with the gaming world. Bandai Namco, recognizing the complexity of the Tekken saga’s storyline, released a story-so-far trailer to bring players up to speed.

This move is not entirely unprecedented in the gaming industry, as seen with “Alan Wake 2,” which used a similar approach. However, the choice of Cox as the narrator sets “Tekken 8” apart.

Brian Cox, renowned for his portrayal of Logan Roy, the antagonistic patriarch in HBO’s “Succession,” lends his narrative talent to this brief yet captivating five-minute recap.

The irony of Cox describing in-game events like characters throwing their fathers off cliffs, a nod to the dramatic and often brutal storyline of Tekken, adds an intriguing layer to the recap. Fans of his work in both “Succession” and “Super Troopers” might find themselves drawing amusing parallels as they listen to his narration.

While Brian Cox is not a regular name in the gaming industry, his involvement in games is not entirely new. He has previously voiced characters in notable titles such as the controversial “Manhunt,” where he played antagonist Lionel Starkweather, and the “Killzone” series as Helgen overlord Scolar Visari. His venture into the Tekken universe marks another significant crossover between the realms of television and video games.

Cox’s narration has been particularly praised for his accurate pronunciation of Japanese names, such as ‘Mishima Zaibatsu,’ a testament to his dedication and perhaps assistance from a language coach. This attention to detail has not gone unnoticed by the gaming community, adding to the authenticity of the experience.

“Tekken 8” is set to release on Friday, January 26, and while Cox’s character, Logan Roy, is not a playable fighter in the game, the inclusion of unexpected characters is not new to Tekken. For instance, “Tekken 7” introduced Negan from “The Walking Dead” as a DLC character, leaving the door open for more surprising additions in the future.
