The Sky’s the Limit in Star Citizen’s New Legatus DLC Adventure

Exploring the Extravagance and Expansion of Star Citizen's Latest Offerings

Star Citizen, the ambitious space simulation game by Cloud Imperium Group, has once again made headlines with its latest DLC pack, the Legatus, which carries a staggering price tag of nearly £46,000 (€53K / $58K). This latest offering has sparked a mix of awe and controversy in the gaming community.

First introduced five years ago at £21K ($27K), the Legatus DLC pack has consistently been the game’s most polarizing add-on. The newest version of this pack, as highlighted by Tweaktown, isn’t just an incremental upgrade; it includes all the content from previous Legatus packs along with every add-on released since.

According to the official website, this “definitive armada” boasts over 175 vessels from every notable manufacturer and is described as a perfect collection through the year 2953. This pack isn’t just about the quantity of content but also the quality, offering an unparalleled experience in the realm of virtual space exploration.

Adding to this exclusivity is the Karna “Ascension” Rifle, set to be available in-game in Q1 2024, further enhancing the appeal of this deluxe package.

The Cost of Entry

However, the price isn’t the only barrier to entry. As reported by IGN, potential buyers must first be part of Star Citizen’s Chairman’s Club, which requires spending $10,000 on other in-game items (about £7.8K / €9.1K). This tiered approach to purchasing highlights a unique, albeit controversial, marketing strategy in the gaming world.

Despite the eye-watering price, it’s important to note that Star Citizen can be enjoyed with a much more modest investment. As pointed out by players, a $45 ship is sufficient to play the game, with the option to earn everything else through in-game activities, either solo or in groups. Other, more affordable pack options are also available, ensuring the game remains accessible to a broader audience.

Beyond the Game: Cloud Imperium’s Expansion

Last year marked a significant expansion for Star Citizen’s developer, Cloud Imperium Group, with the acquisition of the Montreal-based studio, Turbulent. This collaboration, dating back to 2012, has been a cornerstone of Star Citizen’s development.

The acquisition means that Cloud Imperium now commands a global workforce of over 1,100 people, with Turbulent’s 189 employees and management team remaining intact.

This expansion underscores Cloud Imperium’s commitment to its ambitious projects, including Star Citizen, which is currently available in Alpha. The game continues to evolve, with “additional features and updates” being released progressively.
