After 17 years and 7 blockbuster films, the massively successful Paranormal Activity horror franchise is finally getting its own video game adaptation. Paranormal Activity: Found Footage is being developed by indie studio DreadXP in partnership with Paramount Game Studios, and is helmed by Brian Clarke, creator of 2022’s terrifying hit The Mortuary Assistant.
With its found footage style and focus on slow-building suspense, Paranormal Activity revolutionized horror when the micro-budget original film took theaters by storm in 2009. However, the series has yet to make the jump to interactive entertainment. DreadXP aims to capture the creepy atmosphere and chilling scares of the movies in video game form.
Details are scarce, but Clarke says Found Footage will feature an advanced “Haunt System” that alters the game’s scares based on player actions, making each experience unique. As creative director, Clarke plans to apply lessons learned from The Mortuary Assistant, lauded as one of 2022’s scariest games, to ratchet up the horror even further.
Recreating the visceral terror of seeing Paranormal Activity with an unsuspecting audience in a crowded theater will be difficult, but advanced AI and procedural generation could help emulate the unpredictable, personalized scares.
If Clarke can even come close to the suffocating tension of the first film’s ending, Paranormal Activity: Found Footage may become a new gold standard for video game horror.
Platforms and release date are still unannounced, but fans can expect Paranormal Activity: Found Footage to haunt their consoles and PCs sometime in 2026. After keeping us waiting nearly two decades, here’s hoping the game provides a fright worthy of the revered horror franchise name.
