Devs Urge Baldur’s Gate Community to Stop Threats Over Mods

Studio promises details on mod support but asks fans to refrain from attacking devs.

Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios recently took to social media to condemn a vocal minority of fans who have been threatening and harassing developers over the delayed addition of official mod support to the hit RPG.

In a series of tweets, Larian’s director of publishing Michael Douse acknowledged player frustration but urged an end to toxic behavior and threats toward the Baldur’s Gate team. He reiterated that mod support has been in the works since the game’s early access launch but emphasized that adding major features takes time.

The calls for mod support have grown more intense in recent weeks after the game’s latest patch broke existing mods, requiring players to reinstall and update them. Douse promised more details on plans for official mod support soon but said harassment of developers would only hurt progress.

With the game’s player base expanding rapidly from 2 million to over 10 million, Douse noted that communication has become more difficult to navigate. He praised the “99.9%” of fans who engage positively but said the few bad actors inevitably stand out.

If the toxicity persists, Larian may have to distance itself from the fan community, which Douse said would negatively impact both sides. For now, he asked fans to be patient and refrain from directing anger at Larian’s hard-working mod authors, community teams, and developers.

The Baldur’s Gate 3 team remains focused on rolling out patches and content updates while working behind the scenes on mod support. Douse plans to discuss moderation and communication strategies next week to keep engagement constructive moving forward.

Larian Asks Fans to Curb Toxicity Over Delayed Mod Support

Toxic elements of fan communities have become an industry-wide concern. Devs surveyed last year named player harassment as a serious issue, with many receiving death threats over delays or design choices. While feedback is valued, personal attacks only make game development more difficult.

Larian’s proactive response aims to isolate bad actors and maintain strong relations with players. But the studio made clear threats cannot be tolerated, even from a passionate minority. By calling for patience and civility, the Baldur’s Gate 3 team hopes to keep communication positive as work continues on mod support.
