Yoko Taro Teases Possible Nier 3 Announcement at Concert Tour

Cryptic 'R3PENT' messaging and cheers for a sequel fuel speculation of a Nier 3 reveal.

Nier series director Yoko Taro appeared to tease a potential Nier 3 announcement during the ongoing Nier: Orchestra Concert tour, according to several fans in attendance.

At the recent London show, Taro reportedly took the stage and encouraged the crowd to loudly cheer if they wanted a sequel to 2017’s acclaimed Nier: Automata. The audience erupted with applause and cheers at the suggestion.

Fans also noticed the word “REPENT” displayed repeatedly throughout the concert before morphing into “R3PENT” at the end. This has sparked speculation that Nier 3: Repent could be the name of the next game. The same “R3PENT” text was apparently seen at other European tour stops as well.

While Taro is known for playfully messing with fans, these concert teases align with producer Yosuke Saito’s previous comments that a new Nier entry would arrive eventually with Taro involved. And with Nier: Automata now over 7 years old, the timing seems right.

The Nier franchise saw a remastered version of the original Nier game in 2021 with Nier Replicant. But fans have waited patiently for a full-fledged sequel to Automata and its story about androids 2B and 9S battling machines in a post-apocalyptic world.

The concert tour runs through late March, so there are more opportunities for Taro to stoke anticipation. An official Nier 3 announcement may come soon, especially with the mobile game Nier Reincarnation shutting down in April.

For now, Taro seems to be having fun teasing fans while celebrating the series’ spectacular music. But the cheering crowds clearly demonstrate the demand for another installment. Nier: Automata’s sales of over 8 million copies also speak to the franchise’s momentum. Perhaps the question is not if Nier 3 will arrive, but when.
