Emma Stone Cements Superstardom with Second Best Actress Oscar for Eccentric “Poor Things” Turn

Stone thanks Lanthimos for "gift" of Bella Baxter in heartfelt speech, wins second Best Actress trophy

A broken dress couldn’t stop Emma Stone’s march to a second Oscar crown, as the acclaimed actress took home the Best Actress trophy Sunday night for her eccentric “Poor Things” performance.

Overwhelmed but jubilant in her onstage speech, Stone gave special thanks to director Yorgos Lanthimos for the “gift of a lifetime” in her complex role as the reanimated Bella Baxter.

Stone previously won the 2017 Best Actress prize for hit musical romance “La La Land” and has garnered three other acting nominations across her decorated career. But her daring turn in Lanthimos’ dark fantasy as a woman implanted with a child’s brain required an entirely new level of immersive acting.

“It’s been such an honor to be doing this with you,” Stone told lead actress rival Lily Gladstone, praising the entire category lineup. After lightheartedly acknowledging her dress mishap, Stone called the experience of embodying the primal yet profoundly wise Bella “a gift of a lifetime.”

Now a two-time Best Actress champion at just 34 years old, Stone joins an exclusive club of superstars like Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda and Jodie Foster who have won Hollywood’s highest honor for leading ladies twice over.

On the heels of winning Golden Globe and BAFTA awards earlier this season, Stone’s success across comedy, drama and imaginative indies speaks to her generational talents.

From standing ovations to a broken dress, Stone handled her big Oscar moment with signature charm and grace. Her evolving chapter of iconic roles now includes another legendary Best Actress-winning turn for the ages.
