James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has put an end to a conspiracy theory surrounding the recasting of Superman, which saw Henry Cavill’s departure and the introduction of David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel for the upcoming DC Universe (DCU).

The confusion arose after Nathan Fillion, who worked with Gunn on The Suicide Squad, mentioned that Gunn had informed him about playing the Green Lantern Guy Gardner during the wrap party for The Suicide Squad. This statement fueled speculation that Gunn had already planned the DCU overhaul, including Cavill’s replacement as Superman, at that time.

However, Gunn took to Threads to set the record straight. He clarified that his conversation with Fillion about potentially portraying Guy Gardner actually took place during the wrap party for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, not The Suicide Squad.

This revelation effectively debunks the conspiracy theory, confirming that Gunn’s vision for a new Superman was not secretly in the works during the production of The Suicide Squad. Instead, the decision to recast the iconic superhero role was made later, as part of the broader plans for the DCU’s Chapter One and beyond.

Superman (2025)

The recasting of Superman has been a topic of much discussion and debate among fans. While many expressed their admiration for Henry Cavill’s portrayal and wished for his continued involvement, others recognized the need for a fresh start to align the character with the new creative direction envisioned by Gunn and his co-CEO, Peter Safran.

By choosing David Corenswet, a relatively newcomer to the superhero genre, DC Studios aims to present a Superman closer to the character’s hopeful and optimistic roots, as portrayed in the comics. Corenswet himself has previously expressed a desire to bring a brighter and more uplifting interpretation of the Man of Steel to the big screen, aligning perfectly with Gunn’s stated goal of staying true to the comic book source material.

As the DCU continues to take shape, fans can look forward to Corenswet’s debut as Superman in 2025, marking the beginning of a new era for the iconic superhero. With Gunn’s clarification on the recasting timeline, speculation can give way to anticipation as the DCU’s vision for a reinvigorated and faithful portrayal of the Last Son of Krypton unfolds.
