The upcoming West End production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet,” starring Tom Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, has faced a “barrage of deplorable racial abuse” directed at one of its cast members, the show’s producers have revealed.
In a strongly worded statement, the Jamie Lloyd Company, which is behind the play, condemned the online harassment, declaring, “This must stop.”
The production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, had announced its full cast last week, with Holland taking on the role of Romeo and Amewudah-Rivers making her West End debut as Juliet. However, the company said that following the casting announcement, there had been a disturbing wave of “racial abuse” targeting a member of the ensemble.
“We are working with a remarkable group of artists. We insist that they are free to create work without facing online harassment,” the statement read. “We will continue to support and protect everyone in our company at all costs. Any abuse will not be tolerated and will be reported.”
The production team emphasized that “bullying and harassment have no place online, in our industry or in our wider communities.” They assured that the “Romeo & Juliet” rehearsal room is filled with “joy, compassion and kindness,” as the cast and crew focus on bringing the classic Shakespearean tale to life.
This incident is the latest in a string of high-profile cases of racial discrimination and abuse within the UK’s entertainment industry. A 2021 survey found that 64% of respondents had experienced racist stereotyping during auditions, while 55% had faced racist behavior on set.
The Jamie Lloyd Company’s strong stance against the harassment reflects a growing effort to protect performers from such harmful and unacceptable behavior. By vowing to support and defend its cast, the production is sending a clear message that diversity and inclusion are paramount, and that no actor should have to endure racial abuse while pursuing their craft.
