Nintendo Opts Out of Gamescom 2024, Fueling Speculation Around Switch 2 Reveal

The gaming giant cites "careful consideration" as it breaks with its long-standing tradition of appearing at Europe's largest video game convention.

In a surprising move, Nintendo has confirmed that it will not be attending Gamescom 2024, the largest gaming convention in the world by attendance. The Japanese gaming giant, which has consistently appeared at the Cologne-based event in the past, cited “careful consideration from all perspectives” as the reason behind its decision to sit out this year’s show.

“Gamescom is a great event, and each year we evaluate whether Nintendo should participate or not,” a Nintendo UK spokesperson told Eurogamer. “After careful consideration from all perspectives, we’ve made the decision not to be present at Gamescom 2024. Players will have opportunities to try out Nintendo Switch games at other events throughout the year.”

The move is particularly notable given the ongoing speculation surrounding the development of Nintendo’s next-generation hardware, commonly referred to as the “Switch 2.” Last year, Eurogamer reported that Nintendo had held private meetings with third-party developers around the time of Gamescom to discuss the capabilities of its upcoming console.

However, it seems Nintendo has opted to forgo the global platform of Gamescom this year, potentially hinting that the company may have alternative plans for unveiling its highly anticipated next-gen offering.

“This year, however, after careful consideration from all perspectives, we’ve made the decision not to be present at Gamescom 2024,” the Nintendo spokesperson stated. “Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch as part of other Germany-wide events.”

The decision to skip Gamescom 2024 is a departure from Nintendo’s long-standing tradition of appearing at the event, which has typically served as a key date in the company’s annual calendar. The convention, which attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees, has historically provided a valuable platform for Nintendo to showcase its latest hardware and software offerings.

While Nintendo has provided no further details on its reasoning, industry analysts speculate that the company may be reserving its resources and attention for a more tailored, high-profile reveal of the Switch 2 at a later date. With the highly anticipated next-gen console rumored to launch in early 2025, Nintendo may be strategically positioning itself to maximize the impact of its announcement.

Regardless of the reasons behind the decision, Nintendo’s absence from Gamescom 2024 is sure to stir up even more anticipation and speculation around the company’s future plans. Fans and industry watchers alike will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on Nintendo’s movements in the coming months, eager to learn more about the potential successor to the wildly successful Switch console.
