In a resounding vote of confidence for the acclaimed sci-fi series ‘3 Body Problem,’ Netflix has announced an open-ended renewal, allowing the show to continue its adaptation of Cixin Liu’s revered trilogy of novels until it reaches an “epic conclusion.” While the streaming giant has ordered “all-new episodes” of the hit series, the exact number of seasons required to bring the ambitious adaptation to a satisfying close remains undisclosed.
The news was unveiled during Netflix’s Upfront presentation, where showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss, and Alexander Woo expressed their elation at being granted the opportunity to bring the audience on a journey to the very “end of the universe” as envisioned by Liu’s celebrated literary work.
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion,” the trio stated. “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”
‘3 Body Problem,’ which stars Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Eiza Gonzalez, and Benedict Wong, among others, has been a resounding success for Netflix since its debut earlier this year. The series, which begins with a woman grappling with her father’s death in 1960s China before spiraling into a mind-bending race to save humanity, garnered a staggering 115 million hours watched across its first week, solidifying its status as one of the streaming platform’s biggest hits of the year.
In a previous interview with the Inside Total Film podcast and GamesRadar+, the showrunners hinted at their ambitions to adapt the entirety of Liu’s trilogy, acknowledging that the novels grow progressively longer and more complex, potentially requiring more than three seasons to fully capture the epic scope of the narrative.
“Well, there’s three novels in the trilogy,” Woo explained. “The novels get longer and longer, so I wouldn’t say it maps out exactly to three [seasons].”
Woo further elaborated, “We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that’s three or four, you know, or some other number…The goal is to get to the end of the trilogy, and it seems like it would map out over probably, certainly more than two seasons, but beyond that, it’s hard to know exactly.”
With Netflix’s open-ended commitment to ‘3 Body Problem,’ the creative team now has the flexibility to craft a narrative arc that faithfully captures the full scope and grandeur of Liu’s ambitious and thought-provoking sci-fi epic. While the number of seasons remains uncertain, fans can rest assured that the series will continue its exploration of the trilogy’s mind-bending concepts and profound themes until it reaches its “epic conclusion.”
