Have you checked out the new movie I Came By on Netflix yet? You totally should – it’s one of the creepiest and most thought-provoking films I’ve seen in a while.
The movie follows Toby, a graffiti artist who targets fancy neighborhoods to leave mysterious messages for rich people. But when he breaks into one guy’s house, he finds a prisoner tied up in the basement! Things take a seriously dark turn from there.
The way the movie shows how suddenly dangerous situations can get is so realistic and scary. And when Toby disappears, the intense performance from his mom trying to find out what happened is heartbreaking.
The movie does a great job highlighting real problems too. When Toby’s mom goes to the police, they don’t seem to care because the guy she’s accusing is rich and connected. And it turns out he was preying on immigrants, even though he claims to help them. Talk about hypocrisy!
Hugh Bonneville, who you might know from Downton Abbey, plays the creepy villain. He plays charming one second then totally chilling the next. Your skin will crawl during his scary basement monologue.
None of the characters are completely heroic – the film shows how corruption lets serial killers go free. It left me feeling super unsettled about inequality in the real world. I won’t spoil the ending, but it’s intense and thought-provoking.
If you’re in the mood for an anxious thriller mixed with important social messages, I Came By is perfect. Give it a watch – you won’t be able to look away!
