A pivotal scene in Episode 5 of the HBO series “The Penguin” sees the character of Sofia Falcone undergo a dramatic change. Sofia, played by Cristin Milioti, discards her family name and adopts a new identity as Sofia Gigante. This change represents the culmination of Sofia’s careful development over previous episodes.
Creator Lauren LeFranc wanted to empower Sofia by having her take on the fur coat of her late mother and become a Gigante. “She wants to embody her mother’s spirit,” LeFranc said. Dressed in the fur coat and a black slip, Sofia confronts remaining Falcone family members. “My family disposed of my mother like she was nothing, then they did the same to me,” Sofia declares. “From now on I am a Gigante, and this is a new family.”
Costume designer Helen Huang played a key role in bringing Sofia’s transformation to the screen. Huang described Cristin Milioti as ready for the pivotal scene. The fur coat symbolizes Sofia reclaiming her mother’s legacy, while the slip dress represents her embrace of femininity and power.
LeFranc and Huang were careful not to overly sexualize Sofia’s character. Instead, her evolving wardrobe reflects her inner journey. In early episodes, Sofia remains angry after 10 years in Arkham Asylum, but hides her emotions. Huang drew inspiration from figures like Edie Sedgwick to design Sofia’s post-Arkham style.
As the series progresses, viewers see Sofia’s confidence grow through changes in her wardrobe. This foreshadows her rise as a powerful figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld. How Sofia’s internal conflict expressed through additional costume changes remains to be seen as “The Penguin” continues its season.
