‘ER’ Cast Reunites to Support George Clooney’s Broadway Debut

George Clooney’s ER castmates gather in New York for the opening night of Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway.

George Clooney received familiar support on opening night of his Broadway debut this week. Three of his former ER co-stars—Julianna Margulies, Anthony Edwards, and Noah Wyle—attended the premiere of Good Night, and Good Luck, a stage adaptation of the 2005 film Clooney directed and co-wrote.

Wyle shared a black-and-white group photo on Instagram the following day, writing, “So very proud of my friend. So very happy for the reunion.” The four actors were original cast members of ER, which premiered in 1994 and aired on NBC for 15 seasons until 2009.

This was the first time all four had been photographed together in person in more than twenty years. Their last group appearance happened virtually during the pandemic in 2021. The reunion offered a rare public moment of connection among castmates who helped define a pivotal era in network television drama.

Margulies has remained close with Clooney. In an interview last September, she said they still sign personal emails using their character names, Carol and Doug. She recalled her final appearance in Season 6 of ER, when her character was unexpectedly reunited with Clooney’s in a closing scene. “It really worked,” she said. “Honestly, every now and then I’ll catch it when I’m flipping channels or something. And I still — that music — I still get very emotional.” She remembered her mother’s reaction to the episode, saying, “She screamed, which I think was a lot of people’s reaction.” The scene aired months after Clooney had left the series, and his return had been kept secret.

Both actors returned one more time during ER’s final season in 2009 for the episode “Old Times.” Margulies credited the show with shaping their careers. “ER is responsible for our careers. I will always be indebted to ER,” she said.

Noah Wyle, who played Dr. John Carter, continues to work in television. He stars in the Max series The Pitt, which has been renewed for a second season. Wyle also serves as executive producer on the show, working again with former ER collaborators R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells. The Season 1 finale airs April 10.

Wyle also recently looked back on a memorable ER episode while speaking with TVLine. The Season 6 story “Be Still My Heart” featured his character and med student Lucy Knight, played by Kellie Martin, being stabbed in a surprise attack. The episode remains one of the show’s most discussed and was part of the arc leading to Margulies’ final appearance that same season.

Clooney’s play opened at Lincoln Center Theater and marks his first appearance on a Broadway stage. The production revisits the political media landscape of the 1950s, drawing from the original film, which received multiple Academy Award nominations following its 2005 release.
