Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry spoke about their experience working together on Crime 101 during their appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where Amazon MGM Studios promoted the upcoming heist thriller.
In a red carpet interview, Hemsworth said he approached the project with a sense of unease, citing Berry’s long-standing career and on-screen presence. “I’ve admired Halle’s work for many, many years,” Hemsworth said. “I was obviously very intimidated to sit opposite her within a scene and try and, you know, not just be in awe of what she was doing.”
He described the filming process as unexpectedly collaborative, noting that Berry helped establish a tone that encouraged creative exchange. “Certain people just bring out not just the best in you, but also sort of a comfort level where it feels like it’s a place to explore and it’s a place to examine different ideas and try different things,” Hemsworth said. “And that was the experience [with Berry]. I loved every second of it.”
Berry spoke about Hemsworth’s presence on set, calling him “a stand-up guy” and describing a moment when he stepped in to support her during production. “I won’t go into it now but he stood up for me in a moment in our movie,” she said. “Instantly I knew right then I’m gonna follow this guy, be a fan of this guy for the rest of his life because he stood up for a woman. He didn’t have to do it and he did it.”
The two actors joined director Bart Layton in promoting the film at the industry convention. Layton previously directed American Animals and brings a similar attention to character and tension in this adaptation.
Crime 101 is based on Don Winslow’s novella and centers on a series of jewel heists connected by a consistent pattern. The investigation is led by detective Lou Lubesnick, a character tracking a suspect who lives by a personal set of rules referred to as “Crime 101.”
The cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Tate Donovan, Devon Bostick, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte. The project was part of Amazon MGM’s upcoming slate previewed at CinemaCon.
