Actress Carrie Coon and political commentator Meghan McCain have exchanged barbed remarks following comments made about a conservative character in HBO’s The White Lotus. The disagreement, which began with a magazine interview, quickly played out across social media and news platforms.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coon discussed the character portrayed by Leslie Bibb, saying, “I do think people like Meghan McCain and her community are really gratified to see a conservative person on television.” She added that people in her own life had reached out to say the portrayal didn’t vilify the character, known as Kate.
McCain reacted to the quote on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “Yes Carrie, I am ‘gratified that the conservative character represented one not making a fool of herself,” and went on to criticize Coon’s character in the show. “Unlike the progressive liberal you’re representing who is sleeping with hotel staff and showing her tits to everyone.”
Coon, active on social media, responded to McCain by quoting her post and writing, “I didn’t realize my quote was so inflammatory. Is ‘gratified’ a new trigger word?”
McCain responded again, questioning why the actress was engaging her. “If I were on a hit tv show on HBO the last thing I would be doing is spending my time fighting with conservatives for weeks.”
The exchange follows a previous encounter between the two on social media. In March, McCain praised Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, writing that it was “so beautiful.” Coon responded with, “Who’s gonna tell her,” which led McCain to post a screenshot of Bibb’s character looking annoyed. At the time, McCain wrote that she wasn’t sure if she should keep watching the show after the exchange.
Despite the friction, McCain continued viewing the series. She referenced recent plot details and said she found Bibb’s character to be the most relatable. “She’s like a normal friend. She was the one that was drinking water and had her pajamas on … the one who’s going to church every week,” McCain said.
Speaking to The Daily Wire, McCain said she found it strange to be singled out. “I don’t understand why Carrie Coon’s been talking about me as much as she has,” she said. “It just feels so random, like given that she’s on the biggest show on TV.”
She added that she believes some people in entertainment are uncomfortable with conservative women being part of the audience. “It’s so triggering for people like her that Republican women exist, that we just live in the world and breathe and watch her content.”
McCain also questioned why actors publicly criticize viewers with differing views while continuing to rely on their attention and support. “I just don’t understand this,” she said. “It’s weird and unfortunate.”
The White Lotus Season 3 finale is scheduled to air Sunday. The current storyline includes a trip to Thailand, where Coon’s character discovers one of her friends voted for Donald Trump.
