Despite the recent wave of cancellations that has swept through Ubisoft, leaving seven unannounced titles in its wake, there is still one beacon of hope shining brightly on the horizon: Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Though its production history stretches back nearly two decades, this highly-anticipated sequel remains in development, defying the odds and refusing to be silenced.

As if to further underscore the tumultuous state of affairs at Ubisoft, last week saw the announcement of yet another three canceled productions, along with the delay of Skull and Bones.

In light of these events, it’s no surprise that PCGamesN – a publication known for its keen interest in all things gaming – has taken an interest in the status of Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, one thing is clear: the development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 is a testament to the determination and passion of its creators, who refuse to be deterred by setbacks and obstacles.

It is a shining example of the creative spirit that drives the gaming industry forward, and a reminder of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.

“The work on Beyond Good and Evil 2 continues and the team is working hard to achieve its ambitious goals ,” a spokesman for the French corporation assured in response.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Was Apparently Scrapped and Is Being Developed Over Again

As the dawn of production history broke in 2003, following the premiere of the first installment, it was greeted with open arms by audiences, yet met with a tepid response at the box office.

But fear not, as the visionary director Michel Ancel reassured the world that he had grand plans for the universe and intended to craft a cinematic trilogy. Little did we know, these plans were nothing but a pipe dream.

Fast forward to 2007, Ancel candidly confessed in an interview that he was working on a “personal” project, which was immediately decoded by fans as the highly-anticipated Beyond Good and Evil 2.

This speculation was further fueled by Ancel’s mention of Jade, the beloved protagonist of the first installment. And in May 2008, the anticipation reached a fever pitch as the first teaser was released, though the title was kept under wraps, it was clear to all that this was the long-awaited sequel.

In the bustling summer of 2009, a tantalizing glimpse into the world of Beyond Good and Evil 2 emerged in the form of a leaked trailer. It featured our beloved protagonist, Jade, sprinting through the crowded streets in a frenzy of action and excitement.

Though the director confirmed the authenticity of the footage, the game remained shrouded in mystery for the next several years.

Rumors and speculation swirled around the project, with reports of progress on the development coming in fits and starts. But the mastermind behind the game, Michel Ancel, remained steadfast in his commitment to bringing the epic prequel to life.

Known for his work on the beloved Rayman series, as well as the critically acclaimed Wild, Ancel poured his heart and soul into the development of Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Finally, in 2017, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived. At E3, the first official trailer for the game was unveiled to the world, and it was clear that the wait had been worth it.

We learned that the game was not just a simple sequel, but an ambitious prequel that would take us on a journey through a vast, interconnected world with procedurally generated levels that would offer endless possibilities for exploration and adventure.

The game was in development for a decade, but the end result would be a masterpiece that would be cherished for decades to come.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was a game of ambition, and the final product was nothing short of a masterpiece, an epic adventure that would take players on a journey through a world that was both familiar and yet entirely new.

As the dust began to settle, the topic of the much-anticipated game slipped back into the shadows, occasionally stirred by whispers of ongoing development. But the true elephant in the room was the departure of Michel Ancel, the game’s director, from Ubisoft in 2020.

It was as if the very heart and soul of the project had walked out the door, leaving fans to wonder if the game would ever see the light of day.

Rumors swirled that Ancel’s departure was tied to the scandals that plagued Ubisoft that year, with high-ranking employees facing accusations of mobbing and other misconduct.

Ancel himself was even caught up in the internal investigations, leading many to believe that the weight of it all had driven him to leave the video game industry altogether in search of a new path. Some say he even started a sanctuary dedicated to education, nature lovers, and animals.

But despite the turmoil, the game lived on, a testament to the passion and dedication of those still working on it. And as the world waited with bated breath for its release, one thing was certain: whatever the future held for Michel Ancel, his legacy in the world of gaming would live on.
