The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 witnessed Sweden’s crowning glory as their entrant, Loreen, won the prestigious competition. With her captivating song “Tattoo,” Loreen outperformed contestants from 25 other countries, racking up an impressive 583 points.
As per the Eurovision tradition, the victory implies that Sweden will likely be the host nation for next year’s contest.
A Look at the Competition
Not far behind Sweden, Finland’s Käärijä clinched the second spot with a commendable score of 526 points, while Israel’s Noa Kirel secured the third place with 362 points.
The contest for this year unfolded in Liverpool, U.K. as an alternative to Ukraine, last year’s winner, due to the precarious situation following the Russian invasion. The Ukrainian entry, Kalush Orchestra, emerged victorious in the previous year’s contest, closely followed by the U.K.’s Sam Ryder.
Notably, this victory marks Loreen’s second triumph at the Eurovision Song Contest, with her first win dating back to 2012 for her song “Euphoria.”
About the Eurovision Song Contest
Eurovision is an esteemed music competition run by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). It features a diverse range of musical acts from across Europe, as well as from several non-European countries such as Israel and Australia, courtesy of their EBU membership.
The 2023 edition of Eurovision was hosted by an ensemble of notable personalities, including rapper-turned-“Britain’s Got Talent” judge Alisha Dixon, “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham, Ukrainian rock star Julia Sanina, and veteran Eurovision commentator Graham Norton.
The event was inaugurated by several prominent faces such as Catherine, the Princess of Wales, Andrew Lloyd Webber, rapper Ms Banks, Joss Stone, and last year’s winner, Kalush Orchestra.
The audience was also treated to a performance by Sam Ryder, last year’s runner-up, who performed his new single “Mountain” alongside Queen drummer Roger Taylor, as well as a host of former Eurovision contestants who paid homage to some of Liverpool’s most renowned musical artists.
