Battle the Horde: The Callisto Protocol Unveils Riot Mode DLC

The Callisto Protocol introduces Riot Mode, a thrilling new DLC that invites players to face relentless enemy waves, promising high-adrenaline action and fresh tactical challenges.

Eager gamers, brace yourselves. Riot Mode, the latest DLC for The Callisto Protocol, is set to launch tomorrow. This new gameplay experience centers around a thrilling challenge: to overcome relentless waves of formidable enemies.

As you successfully vanquish your foes, you’ll face escalating difficulties, enhancing the adrenaline rush. The fun is further amped up as you earn credits, which can be spent on upgrades and loot procured from crates scattered across the arena.

I recently engaged in an insightful conversation with Kevin Jaszanovits, Level Designer, and Philip Greene, Senior Systems Engineer, part of the creative force behind The Callisto Protocol’s Riot Mode. They provided a fascinating glimpse into this exhilarating new gameplay mode.

Breaking Free: Reinventing the Core Gameplay

Riot Mode introduces a unique twist to The Callisto Protocol’s core gameplay, necessitating the developers to deviate from some of the main game’s norms and experiment with their established designs.

“The idea was to transform this mode into more of an arcade experience rather than sticking to the conventional horror-game mold. We wanted to ramp up the fun factor,” Jaszanovits revealed. His main objective as a level designer was to cultivate an environment that keeps players continuously on the move, feeling as though they’re perpetually pursued and surrounded by adversaries. “Our focus was on eliminating or adjusting gameplay elements that hindered player momentum,” he added.

Echoing Jaszanovits’ sentiments, Greene elaborated, “We aimed to create a straightforward, enjoyable gameplay loop with a secondary aspect that encourages players to devise new tactics across multiple play sessions. This approach resulted in several distinct systems that grant players increased power over time, allowing them to find their unique playstyle and bulldoze through the waves of infected.”

Power and Strategy: Adapting to the Challenge

Riot Mode presents players with dynamic enemy behaviors and wave compositions, requiring constant adaptation and tactical planning. With only two weapon slots at your disposal, the careful allocation of credits for weapon upgrades and swaps, as well as accessing health, GRP, and fuse containers, becomes crucial.

When the action reaches a fever pitch, unleash the rampage mode — a temporary buff granting unlimited ammo, GRP usage, and instant enemy takedowns.

“We wanted to immerse players in the pure joy of combat,” said Greene. “We loaded the game with features that amplify the thrill of battle, empowering the player with potent weapons and additional perks to escalate the combat experience.”

Riot Mode enhances its arcade-inspired vibe with a scoring system based on kills and dismemberments, keeping track of player progress throughout the game. “Our internal chats are abuzz with team members posting their high scores, with bragging rights demanding proof,” Jaszanovits amusingly shared.

Available from May 23, 2022, as part of the Riot Bundle (included with The Callisto Protocol Digital Deluxe Edition and Season Pass or available for individual purchase), Riot Mode is a riveting and entertaining addition to The Callisto Protocol. It offers constant, free-flowing combat, intriguing subsystems, and a streamlined gameplay loop, promising hours of immersive gaming.

The Riot Bundle also brings eleven new enemy death animations and The Prospector Skin Collection to the table. So, are you prepared to start your own riot?
