New Challenge Awaits in Halo Infinite with Firefight: King of the Hill

Halo Infinite's December update brings the much-awaited Firefight: King of the Hill mode, offering a fresh twist on the classic PvE survival experience.

Halo Infinite is set to receive a significant update on December 5th, marking the introduction of the eagerly anticipated Firefight: King of the Hill mode. This addition revitalizes the classic player versus environment (PvE) survival mode, a fan favorite in previous Halo titles, with a new strategic twist.

In a detailed Halo Waypoint blog post, technical designer Connor Kennelly outlines the workings of this new mode. Firefight: King of the Hill supports up to four players in cooperative gameplay and incorporates a strategic objective – capturing and holding a Hill while combating waves of campaign enemies. Victory in a round hinges on securing the Hill and overcoming the boss wave.

Matches are structured into five rounds, with a victory condition set at winning at least three rounds. Teams face the risk of losing a round if enemies capture the Hill or if the entire team is eliminated. Unlike the traditional shared life pool in classic Firefight, this mode introduces a longer respawn timer and the high-risk option of reviving teammates.

Gameplay Dynamics and Skull Streaks

Between rounds, players can replenish their ammunition and pick new weapons, preparing for the next Hill that spawns in a different location. The absence of a timer allows matches to span approximately 15 to 20 minutes, emphasizing strategy and teamwork.

An exciting feature in this mode is the incorporation of “semi-random” Skulls. These are activated at the end of a round if players emerge victorious without any deaths, creating a streak. With each subsequent round won without casualties, additional Skulls are introduced, enhancing the game’s difficulty. However, if a player dies, the most recently added Skull is deactivated. The Skulls escalate from simpler challenges like the radar-disabling Fog to more intense ones in later rounds.

Expansive Map Selection

Halo Infinite

Firefight: King of the Hill launches with an impressive roster of nine maps. This collection includes five existing Halo Infinite maps, three community-made maps, and the brand-new House of Reckoning map debuting with the December update. The full list showcases a variety of terrains and settings, promising diverse gameplay experiences.

Alongside Firefight: King of the Hill, the December Update enriches Halo Infinite with more additions. Notably, it introduces the new Repair Field equipment, enhancing strategic options for players. The update also brings a host of new features to the Forge, expanding the creative possibilities within the game.

With the introduction of Firefight: King of the Hill, Halo Infinite’s December update offers a dynamic and strategic expansion of the game’s co-op experience. This mode promises to challenge veterans and newcomers alike, ensuring an engaging and refreshed gameplay experience in the Halo universe.
