Skull and Bones Launch Disappointing but Core Players Remain Hooked

Despite Development Troubles, Ubisoft Touts Engagement Metrics.

Ubisoft’s long-awaited pirate simulation game Skull and Bones finally launched in February 2024 after over a decade in development, but despite high hopes, the release has been somewhat underwhelming so far.

Although Ubisoft boasted of record player engagement for Skull and Bones, with users spending over 4 hours per day on average playing the game, total player numbers have reportedly not yet hit 1 million. This is likely below expectations given the game’s AAA budget and marketing push.

Skull and Bones had a troubled development history spanning multiple delays, leadership changes, and creative reboots since its original conception in 2012. The final product represents a scaling back of the initial ambition, focusing on authentic naval simulation and open world piracy rather than a narrative campaign. Reviews have been lukewarm, with many critics saying the experience feels hollow and repetitive.

Nonetheless, Ubisoft is celebrating the game’s initial wave of devoted players who are deeply engaging with the expansive mechanics of building up a pirate fleet, exploring the seas, and battling enemy ships. The publisher states Skull and Bones now ranks second for average daily playtime among its titles released over 37 years.

The Season 1 content update Raging Tides introduced new challenges and progression systems to satisfy players’ hunger for more. A new bounty hunt against the evil pirate Lord Philippe La Peste, new legendary enemy warships to take down, and additional treasure hunts and customization options provide motivation to keep sailing the seas.

While the future is uncertain, Ubisoft remains confident that their vision of an immersive, systems-driven pirate fantasy can find an audience. Only time will tell whether Skull and Bones can turn the tide by building momentum through robust post-launch support and word of mouth, or if it is doomed to be left adrift in a crowded market.
