Galaxy S24 Displays Plagued With ‘Grainy’ and Banding Issues In Low Light

Samsung faces growing complaints about grainy, banded screens on new S24 phones when viewed in darkness.

Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy S24 is facing concerning display flaws, with users reporting both grainy distortion and odd banding when viewing dark backgrounds or colors.

On Reddit threads and forums, S24 owners describe a grainy or speckled appearance in dim lighting, especially when viewing darker content. Separately, some users see pronounced horizontal banding stripes on consistent colors at low brightness.

The graininess, termed “mura” in displays, arises from uneven brightness between pixels struggling to maintain uniform output. It plagued older devices like the Pixel 2 XL. Experts say Samsung may have yield issues with the S24’s new panel, causing defective screens prone to mura.

Mura is only visible below 10% brightness, with red and blue subpixels most affected. Meanwhile, the banding flaws emerge on solid colors at low levels. Users say restarting or getting a replacement phone fails to resolve it.

The issues suggest potential quality control problems in Samsung’s rush to new display tech. They again raise concerns about its QC after previous criticism over washed out S24 colors.

These display defects severely impact low-light use cases like reading at night or using dark mode. Faint graininess and stripes are distracting and degrade the viewing experience consumers expect from a premium device.

Samsung continues investigating the problems, but it seems another example of its issues optimizing new screen technologies for mass production. The company may need to refine manufacturing pipelines to eliminate panel variations causing defects only visible in niche use cases.

For now, buyers may want to thoroughly test their S24’s display in low light situations during return periods. Samsung urgently needs to diagnose and resolve these problems undermining trust in its signature phone displays.

From washed out colors to grainy, banded low light performance, the Galaxy S24 series continues exhibiting concerning display defects. Samsung must reinforce quality control to restore confidence.
