Disney+ subscribers can soon add another animated gem to their watchlist as the streaming service has announced the arrival of “Wish,” the latest musical fantasy from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Beginning April 3, 2024, viewers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the magical kingdom of Rosas and join the adventure of Asha, a determined young idealist, and her cosmic companion, Star.
“Wish” follows the story of Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old girl who applies to become the apprentice of King Magnifico (Chris Pine). However, her dreams are shattered when she discovers that the benevolent ruler has been secretly stealing the wishes of his people, fueled by a desire to maintain his royal power.
One fateful night, Asha’s fervent wish for change manifests as a glowing yellow star, aptly named Star. Together, this unlikely duo embarks on a quest to confront King Magnifico, who has turned to dark magic to protect his reign. With the help of her friends and family, Asha must restore the wishes of the kingdom and save her people from Magnifico’s corruption.
“Wish” underperformed at the box office upon its release over the Thanksgiving weekend, grossing a modest $31.7 million over five days, despite projections ranging from $45 to $50 million. Nonetheless, the film resonated with audiences, earning an impressive 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While critical reception was mixed, Variety’s chief film critic, Owen Gleiberman, praised “Wish” as a “visually pleasing, eminently watchable slice of enchanted product — with a plot that’s both mildly touching and slightly strange.”
