In a stunning display of success, the independent game studio Landfall has announced that its co-op horror title Content Warning has surpassed 1 million in paid sales. This achievement comes hot on the heels of the game’s viral free-to-claim launch on April 1st, which saw over 6.6 million players snap up copies.
“Bring out the party poopers,” Landfall said in a message to players, celebrating the impressive milestone. The studio went on to thank its dedicated fan base, noting that “some fun updates and fixes are on the way” for the game.
According to Landfall CEO Wilhelm Nylund, Content Warning sold over 100,000 copies on its very first day of going paid at $8 – a figure that the studio says is “multiple times more” than any of their previous titles. The game then added another 125,000 units the following day, crossing the 700,000 mark in its first week.
“We didn’t expect the game to blow up so quickly and were afraid that nobody would be interested in purchasing it after the end of the free-to-claim period,” Nylund admitted in an interview with PC Gamer. However, the studio believes that the initial viral surge of 6.2 million free downloads in 24 hours was a key factor behind the game’s subsequent commercial success.
With Content Warning now the 5th highest-grossing game on Steam during its debut week – surpassing stalwarts like PUBG and Apex Legends – Landfall is understandably elated. “People woke up one day and suddenly they’re just bombarded with a bunch of footage from a new game,” Nylund said, explaining the game’s meteoric rise.

Of the over 6,200 Steam reviews, a remarkable 92% are positive, suggesting that Landfall has tapped into something that has resonated deeply with gamers.
Moving forward, the studio is now focused on supporting Content Warning with future updates, while also working on its next major release, the fast-paced runner HASTE: Broken Worlds.
