Liam McIntyre, the voice actor behind protagonist JD Fenix in the Gears of War series, has dropped a strong hint that the long-awaited next installment may finally be unveiled at an upcoming Xbox showcase in June.
In response to a fan’s question on X (formerly Twitter) about whether JD’s death at the end of Gears of War 5 is considered canon, McIntyre cryptically replied, “I have no idea. I think @GearsofWar will tell us all in June.”
This tease from the actor playing one of the franchise’s central characters has reignited speculation that Gears of War 6, the next entry in the iconic third-person shooter series, could be announced as soon as next month.
The Gears of War franchise, developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios, is renowned for its gritty sci-fi setting, explosive combat, and innovative cover-based shooting mechanics. The original 2006 title was a landmark release that helped define the last console generation.
However, it has been five years since the previous mainline installment, Gears 5, which left fans with a cliffhanger ending requiring a major narrative choice that significantly impacted the fates of JD Fenix and Del Walker.
McIntyre’s comments suggest this storyline thread may finally be addressed and resolved in the potential next game. His involvement also implies JD could still have a role to play, despite meeting a tragic demise for some players in Gears 5’s conclusion.
Microsoft has already confirmed plans for an Xbox Games Showcase in June, which would provide a prime opportunity to unveil Gears of War 6 ahead of a release potentially slated for 2024 or 2025.
Fans of the long-running shooter series will be eagerly awaiting further updates next month, hoping the iconic chainsaw lancers will finally make their return after a half-decade hiatus.
