“Morels: The Hunt 2” – An Unexpected Delight in Mushroom Foraging and Wilderness Exploration

Morels: The Hunt 2 Blends Mushroom Collecting, Wildlife Photography, and Fantastical Elements to Create an Immersive and Captivating Adventure

When the email for the upcoming launch of “Morels: The Hunt 2” landed in my inbox, I must admit, I was a bit skeptical. A game about hunting… mushrooms? Really? However, as I quickly discovered, this sequel to the original “Morels: The Hunt” is far from a gimmicky or boring experience. In fact, it has become my unexpected new gaming obsession.

Developed by the Abrams brothers, “Morels: The Hunt 2” takes players on a captivating journey through lush, photorealistic wilderness environments, blending the thrill of mushroom foraging with the wonder of wildlife photography and the occasional fantastical element. Yes, you read that right – unicorns, crystal skulls, and robot parts are all part of this surprisingly engaging game.

The driving force behind the game’s creation was the Abrams brothers’ own lifelong passion for mushroom hunting. “We still do it every year,” Wes Abrams shared. “We always take photos of the animals and nature while we are hunting. This is basically how the game came about.” This genuine enthusiasm and attention to detail shine through in the game’s immersive design and mechanics.

As you explore the various levels, the sense of discovery is palpable. The maps, while relatively small, are meticulously crafted, with subtle lighting transitions, realistic sound effects, and a wealth of flora and fauna to discover. Whether you’re scouring the forest floor for a rare morel mushroom or capturing a stunning photograph of a blue jay or bear, the experience is both calming and captivating.

The game’s original mushroom-centric focus has also been expanded, with the developers acknowledging that not everyone can engage in this hobby in the real world. “We of course would always recommend going out and doing this in real life over playing the game, given the choice,” Abrams said. “There are people who live in cities who just don’t have easy access to areas like this. My personal favorite that has touched us the most are the messages we have received from players who have told us they were disabled, not healthy enough, or other reasons like that which prevent them from doing things like this anymore, and they just thanked us for making a game like this.”

This thoughtful approach to accessibility and inclusivity is commendable and reflects the game’s overall sense of wholesomeness. Even the unexpected inclusions of unicorns, crystal skulls, and robot parts, while initially perplexing, add an element of whimsy and wonder to the experience, hinting at the potential for even more fantastical adventures in the future.

Morels: The Hunt 2

As the Abrams brothers look ahead, they’ve expressed interest in expanding the “Morels” franchise beyond the mushroom-hunting theme, potentially exploring alien worlds and discovering new species of flora and fauna. The seeds of these ideas have already been planted, with Easter eggs and hints scattered throughout the first two games.

Whether you’re a seasoned mushroom hunter or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world, “Morels: The Hunt 2” is a delightful and unexpected gaming experience that offers a refreshing respite from the more intense, action-packed titles that often dominate the market. It’s a game that celebrates the simple joys of exploration, discovery, and connecting with the great outdoors – even if that connection comes in a digital form.
